Understanding Expressive Arts Therapy
Expressive arts therapy uses creative processes, including visual art and music, guided by a trained therapist, to help process emotions and experiences that can be difficult to access through talk therapy alone. Art and music therapy are grouped together as "expressive arts therapies" because they share common roots in creativity and similar therapeutic goals, even though the specific activities differ.
Research supports both approaches: a systematic review of art therapy found significant positive improvements in the large majority of randomized controlled trials studied, and broader research shows arts engagement, including music therapy, can reduce mental distress, depression, and anxiety while enhancing overall wellbeing. We offer expressive arts therapy as a complementary part of your treatment plan, alongside primary evidence-based approaches like CBT, DBT, and medication management.
Located in Phoenixville, we offer expressive arts therapy to individuals throughout Chester County and the greater Philadelphia region, including Pottstown, Malvern, Norristown, and surrounding communities.
