Understanding Inpatient & Residential Care
Sometimes, symptoms are severe enough that PHP, IOP, or outpatient care aren't the right starting point — or someone in treatment with us needs a higher level of support than we're able to provide directly. In those situations, we help coordinate a referral to a trusted residential or inpatient care partner.
According to SAMHSA, inpatient care means staying at a hospital or treatment program for 24-hour medical supervision, typically for short-term acute crises. Residential care is different — a live-in program usually lasting weeks to months, focused on stabilizing more serious conditions and preparing someone to return to community-based care, like PHP or IOP.
We remain involved throughout this process, and we're ready to continue your care with us once you're stable enough to step down to a lower level of care.

How the Referral Process Works
- 1
Assessment
Our team conducts a thorough assessment to determine whether a higher level of care is genuinely the right next step, not just the fastest one. This decision is made collaboratively with you, based on your specific symptoms and safety needs.
- 2
Full Coordination with the Residential Facility
Once a referral is appropriate, we handle the coordination directly with our trusted residential partner — sharing relevant clinical history, confirming admission logistics, and staying in communication throughout your stay so nothing falls through the cracks between providers.

Continue Your Care With PABH After Residential
Residential treatment isn't the end of the road — it's a stabilizing step. When you're ready to step down, we welcome you back to continue care at PABH, whether that means starting with PHP, moving into IOP, or ongoing outpatient support, so your treatment stays connected rather than starting over from scratch.
Signs a Higher Level of Care May Be Needed
- Symptoms severe enough to require 24-hour supervision
- Difficulty stabilizing despite consistent engagement in PHP or IOP
- Safety concerns that require a more structured, supervised environment
- A need for more intensive support before stepping down to PHP, IOP, or outpatient care
If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 988 or go to the nearest emergency room.
