Understanding Process Addiction
A process addiction, also called a behavioral addiction, involves compulsive engagement in an activity, such as gambling, video games and internet use, shopping, or sex, despite negative consequences to relationships, work, or finances. Unlike substance addiction, no substance is involved, but the underlying compulsive patterns and their impact on daily life can be just as significant.
Gambling Disorder is formally recognized in the DSM-5, with research estimating it affects approximately 0.5% of U.S. adults. Internet Gaming Disorder, recognized by the World Health Organization, is estimated to affect roughly 0.3% to 1.0% of the general population at a diagnosable level. Compulsive shopping and sex addiction are also widely recognized clinically. Across all of these, research consistently shows process addictions frequently co-occur with other mental health conditions, most commonly depression, anxiety, and ADHD, which is why we treat process addictions within a mental health setting, addressing the compulsive behavior and any underlying conditions together, as part of one coordinated plan.
Located in Phoenixville, we provide process addiction treatment to individuals throughout Chester County and the greater Philadelphia region, including Pottstown, Malvern, Norristown, and surrounding communities.
